About the Item

Giovanni Battista Beinaschi (Fossano, Italy, 1636 - Naples, Italy, 1688) Title: Saint Bartholomew Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 96 x 71.5 cm – with frame 108 x 86 cm Shaped and gilded wooden cassetta frame Not signed Expertise by Francesco Petrucci, art historian Provenance: (detailed report in the expertise) Collection of del Duca di Frisa, 1680 (Naples?). Collection of the Géneral Comte Sextius Alexandre Francois de Miollis, ex Villa Miollis al Quirinale (important great painter), published in 1814. Then private collection. The subject of the painting is a life-size half-length portrait of Saint Bartholomew. The apostle Bartholomew, is immediately identifiable by the knife in his right hand, the symbol of his torture, martyred by flaying. The figure stands out against a dark background, illuminated from the top left, with visible traces of age. The upper body is slightly inclined, the head bald and grey-bearded, the gaze thoughtful. The right hand, almost clenched into a fist, holds the knife as an attribute of the saint, who is said to have been flayed in Mesopotamia. Michelangelo demonstrated the same powerful position of the knife in his Bartholomew in the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. A reference to the flaying of the martyr is probably implied in the delicate display of the folds of the aged skin of the upper body in the present painting. The tonality of the colour scheme and the tenebrous chiaroscuro are contrasted here only by the blue in the cloak. We find this style in a number of other artists of the time, such as Mattia Preti (1613-1699), Guercino (1591-1666) and Pier Francesco Mola (1612-1666). There is also a clear proximity to Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), who also worked in Naples, especially to his portraits of the apostles. The work has been attributed by critics to Giovanni Battista Beinaschi (1636-1688), an artist of the first order on the Italian seventeenth-century scene. Like many of his contemporaries, Beinaschi also worked in several places, mainly between Rome and Naples. He painted the nave and dome of St Maria degli Angeli in Pizzofalcone and the dome of St Maria delle Grazie in Caponapoli, to name but a few. From the 1660s onwards, he influenced younger painters such as Francesco Solimena (1657-1747) and Paolo de Matteis (1662-1728). Works by his hand can be found in numerous, mostly public collections and museums.
