Formally documented in The Life and Letters of John Burroughs (Vol. II, p. 168), this monumental canvas is not merely a portrait; it is a primary historical document. Painted in 1911 at Roxbury, New York—Burroughs’ birthplace and summer retreat—the work captures the "Grand Old Man of Nature" in his 75th year. The intimacy of the setting is palpable; Gassette avoids formal idealization, opting instead for a soulful, "virile" realism that reflects Burroughs' deep connection to the American soil.
The painting’s historical significance was cemented in 1915, when it was chosen as the singular, tipped-in color plate for the invitation to Gassette's solo exhibition at her studio in Chicago's Fine Arts Building.
Grace Gassette was a formidable figure in the expatriate circles of Paris and Chicago. A student of Mary Cassatt, she was praised by contemporaries for a "virile quality" and a mastery of traditional color techniques derived from years of studying the Old Masters. Her work was accepted into the Paris Salons and she even submitted a portrait of Gertrude Stein to the landmark 1913 Armory Show.
Beyond her art, Gassette is a legend of the Great War. For her technical brilliance in designing orthopedic appliances for wounded soldiers—a skill she credited to her deep study of anatomy through painting—she was awarded the French Legion of Honor. She was one of the first two American women, alongside Edith Wharton, to receive this distinction.
Signed, dated and situated at the upper right, our work by Gassette is also inscribed in her hand on the verso. At over 36 inches square, this large format work commands any room, offering the same architectural "presence" that Gassette was famous for in her high-society commissions. It is offered unframed for ease of delivery.
