Harriet Christina Cany was born in 1799 to Charles and Mary Cany in Philadelphia. She lost her husband before 1840 and helped run her family’s store that sold fancy items. She learned from the artist Rembrandt Peale, whom she married in 1840, making her his second wife. Because of her connection to the well-known Peale family of artists, her own accomplishments as an artist are often overlooked.
Harriet Cany Peale showed her art for the first time in 1840 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She kept displaying her work there for the rest of her life, and she also showed it at the Artists' Fund Society. She worked out of a shared studio with her husband in Philadelphia.
Her work is in the collections of the Charles S. and Isabella V. McMullen Museum, Boston College, Boston, MA Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA, The Newark Museum, Newark, NJ
