Hélène Le Roy d'Etiolles (1864-1939). Portrait of girl dressed in amazon. oil on canvas signed lower right "He le Roy d'Etiolles," late 19th century.
A great portraitist, the French painter fully captures the essence of this nameless young woman, whose deep black eyes look at us with a somewhat snobbish air. Dressed Amazon-style with a feathered hat, the black that pervades the canvas is muted in the perfect white of the lace collar and the passionate red of the rose she holds in her hair. The beautiful painting is framed in a wonderful late 19th-century gilded wood frame and is ready to hang on the wall.
Hélène Le Roy d'Étiolles, born Devy in London on June 10, 1864 to French parents and died in 1939, was a French painter. A student of Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, Hélène Le Roy d'Étiolles exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1888 to 1933. His subjects of choice are women and girls, whom he portrays in soft, delicate colors. Among rare women painters, her paintings are also found in some French museums including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris: -Madame Jean Mottet at age 12 (1884-1964), 1897, Lambinet Museum. -End of the Day, Salon of Women Painters and Sculptors 1906, Rouen exhibition 1906 -Woman in Pink, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1911 -Portrait of Young Girl, before 1922, assigned to the Musée d'Orsay, currently in the National Assembly.
