King David playing the harp
Oil on canvas
137 x 102 In frame 150 x 112 cm.
At the centre of the canvas emerges the majestic figure of one of the great biblical characters, King David, in a moment of intimate devotion: his expert fingers gracefully pluck the strings of a harp, the instrument he used to sing the praises of the Lord, allowing us to imagine the notes floating in the air.
His gaze is turned upwards as if he were drawing inspiration directly from the heavenly spheres: according to tradition, with this instrument the king not only entertained his court, but also had the mystical power to drive away tormented spirits and bring relief to the soul (as happened to King Saul).
It is a portrait of a king, a poet and a musician, whose soul sings divine praises through music, offering a powerful and fascinating insight into the link between art, faith and royalty.
We see him portrayed in a majestic position, highlighting his proverbial virtues: royal authority (the crown, the splendid sumptuous and regal robes with the ermine cloak) and his love of poetry in music (the notes written in the book and the precious finely carved lyre).
An interesting detail is the legible notes on the open book and the phrase “Laudate Dominum omnes gentes, laudate eum” (Praise the Lord, all peoples, praise him), which often resounds in the psalms and Christian liturgy and indicates universal praise to God, focused on the figure of King David, a central figure in the Old Testament, loved by God and promised an eternal kingdom.
The laurel branch, which Baroque art loved to include in its portraits, also elevates his intellectual and artistic stature, as tradition attributes the composition of the Psalms to him, and he is therefore often portrayed as the “poet par excellence” of the Bible.
From an attributive point of view, we can place this splendid canvas in the finest tradition of 17th-century Spanish Baroque, specifically in the circle of Francisco de Zurbarán, a leading figure of Seville's “Siglo de Oro” (Golden Age), a fundamental artistic hub known for its mystical and austere style, influenced by Caravaggio's realism, and for its solemn and monumental paintings of great religious figures.
His work is characterised by a very eclectic style, in the use of chiaroscuro and a descriptive technique that pays great attention to the quality of the details. Our painting is a perfect example of this, given the attention to the rendering of the clothing, as well as the jewels adorning King David, all belonging to a repertoire frequently found in the works of Zurbarán and his circle.
In particular, analysis of the various details allows us to link its execution to the Sevillian Ignacio de Ríes (Seville, 1612 - Seville, 1661), one of his most talented pupils and capable of achieving very high levels of quality.
We can easily compare our King David with other portraits by the painter, including San Fernando (Ferdinand III of Castile and León) attributed to Ignacio de Ries, dated around 1655-1665 and currently in Seville City Hall, and again the same subject as ours, King David, which De Ries painted around 1650, now in the Prado Museum in Madrid; both works reveal significant similarities and are striking for their delicacy and the quality of the modelling, achieved through subtle gradations of colour tones and a sophisticated use of light and shadow; the anatomical precision and emotional atmosphere are also noteworthy.

Portrait of gentleman like Solomon, the wise king
Oil painting on canvas

The beautiful painting shows us an image of the famous Solomon king, legendary biblical figure who became the personification of the good reigning over the centuries, and proverbially recognized as one of the wisest politicians in history. The features of the off are presumably those of the client of the work, who wanted to emphasize his image by impersonating a character with legendary fame.

Portrait Noble Man Ceresa Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century Italy Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Carlo Ceresa (San Giovanni Bianco 1609 - Bergamo 1679) attributable
Full-length portrait of Giacomo Pesenti
Oil on canvas (206 x 121 cm - in frame 212 x 133 cm.)
This fascinating portrait, portraying a full-length gentleman and datable to the 17th century, illustrates the stylistic and compositional details typical of the pictorial production of the Lombardy area, Bergamo in particular. This reference is reflected in elements such as the natural light, the sober and austere setting and, above all, the subtle psychological characterisation of the face.
We are inclined to identify the hand of portrait painter Carlo Ceresa, one of the most illustrious Bergamasque figure painters of the 17th century, capable of developing a style of intense realism and acute psychological investigation. In his works, and our portrait perfectly reflects his canons, an extraordinary naturalistic imprint, great realism and remarkable essentiality are evident.
Those traits of severity, moral rigour and austerity typical of his portraiture find a perfect balance here: never courtly or rhetorical, his portraits are profoundly linked to the concept of counter-reform. Immortalising the main personalities of the time, he established himself as a point of reference for the Bergamasque aristocracy, from the Vertova to the Pesenti to the Secco Suardo.
The subject of the portrait is Giacomo Pesenti, here immortalised life-size in a rigorous black suit, his left hand resting on a table, on which is placed the necessities for writing and a manuscript, and his right hand, with a sealed ring on his little finger, abandoned along his side while he holds his gloves.
He wears a suit of incredible rigour, dressed as befits a man of his high social standing, while the sharp light focuses on his face, with an intensity that seems to be accentuated by the reflection of the white collar, with its sharp profile.
For Ceresa, it is not the richness of the garment that gives value to the person portrayed, it is the need to give feeling and bring out the character of the person, and this he succeeds in marvellously, aided by his ability to capture the essence of the person and return it to us in painting through the face and light used as a strong expressive element.
In fact, the image highlights that 'counter-reformed' composure typical of the portraiture of painters active in this area and era, adhering to a verism...

Portrait Philip V King Rigaud Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743) Circle
Portrait of Philip V, King of Spain (Versailles 1683 - Madrid 1746)
Oil on canvas
72 x 59 cm - framed 87 x 74 cm.
The painting examined here, depicting King Philip V of Spain (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), is to be placed in the circle of the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), one of the most significant portrait painters of his time and a great interpreter of the French school.
This is a work of excellent pictorial quality: note the rendering of the facial features and the sharpness of the contours emphasised by the light. The face is characterised by chiaroscuro passages that verisimilarly reproduce light and its effects, rendered with great skill.
Philip V wears a black satin costume with a sword at his side, he wears the stiff white Spanish collar and at the same time wears the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Habsburg Order of the Golden Fleece: this bringing together of the two main orders of France and Spain announced the possibility of a union between the two crowns.
In Spanish costume, this effigy is nevertheless fully in line with the French tradition of ceremonial portraiture, also testifying to the renewal that Rigaud had brought about, particularly through the relationship between the character and the splendour of the decoration.
The work is inspired, reworked in a reduced format to make it suitable for a private clientele, by the large painting that Rigaud made for the sovereign around 1700, today conserved in the Louvre, reproduced by the same workshop in numerous other versions.

Portrait of Charles II, King of Spain, as a child (1661 -1700)
Spain, c. 1670 Oil on canvas 68 x 49 cm. - In antique frame 96 x 75 cm.
The analysis of this portrait, and in particular the style with which its features have been outlined, brings us back to the great tradition of the 17th century Spanish school.
The portrait depicts the young King Charles II of Spain, dressed in typical Spanish fashion, the youngest and only son of Philip IV of Spain and his second wife Maria Anna of Austria, as well as the last of the Habsburg dynasty to rule Spain. which portrayed the young ruler in full length at the age of four (dated 1665), dressed in a black suit and cape, and a large feathered...
