Portrait of Miss Elizabeth Brooke Irish School, circa 1800 circle of James Dowling Herbert (1762-1837) Irish watercolour painting on paper, framed in antique gilt frame, behind glass. condition: beautiful condition and ready to hang provenance: from a private collection here in England. We learn from the old writing verso that Elizabeth Brooke was the daughter of Francis Brooke Esq. Elizabeth is shown standing in a pastoral landscape, dressed in a flowing white Empire-line gown, her figure softly modelled and her expression composed yet gently animated. The simplicity of the costume, natural pose, and outdoor setting lend the work an unmistakably “Jane Austen” sensibility—evoking the world of Regency England, country walks, and understated social elegance. Her turned head and delicate handling of features convey both poise and individuality, hallmarks of high-quality portrait watercolour of the period.
