About the Item
This lovely British Art Deco portrait oil painting is by noted portrait artist James Penniston Barraclough. It was painted in 1923 and is signed and dated lower right. The composition is a seated three quarter length portrait of a pretty young lady with short dark hair in a pink and cream dress set against a light background. There is lovely sensitive detail in her face and the brushwork on her dress is superb. The painting is housed within the most beautiful silvered Art Deco frame that finishes it off perfectly. This is a lovely British 1920's oil portrait and an excellent example of Barraclough's work.
Signed and dated lower right.
Provenance. J J Patrickson label verso.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 35 inches by 27 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an art deco silvered frame, 43 inches by 35 inches, in good condition.
James Penniston Barraclough (1890-1942) was a painter of portraits in oils. He studied at the Royal College of Art. He lived and worked in London and exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool 1, Royal Academy 12, Royal Society of Portrait Painters 7 and Royal Institute of Oil painters 65, becoming a member of the latter in 1922. He was killed in 1942 in London during a bombing raid.
