French School, late 18th century, circle of Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805) Young Girl with a Basket of Fruit Oil on canvas, preparatory work, Unsigned 39 x 31 cm Provenance: Private collection This charming oil on canvas, likely a preparatory study, belongs to the sentimental and graceful tradition of French painting from the second half of the 18th century, and more specifically follows in the footsteps of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. A major painter during the reign of Louis XV and the early years of Louis XVI, Greuze masterfully captured the subtleties of the soul through youthful, often female figures, imbued with gentleness and a sense of domestic virtue.
