About the Item
Jean-Gabriel Domergue (1889–1962) was a distinguished French painter and engraver, celebrated above all for his portraits of elegant women ; or, perhaps more accurately, for a particular feminine ideal that he refined throughout his career, instantly recognisable and imbued with the spirit of Art Deco.
A distant cousin of Toulouse-Lautrec, Domergue studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français as early as 1906. There he garnered several honours, among them the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1913.
In 1939, he designed the now-iconic poster for the inaugural Cannes Film Festival, ultimately cancelled, which depicted a woman applauding beside a man in evening dress. Elected to the Institut de France in 1950, Domergue later served as curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, where he oversaw a number of major exhibitions.

Jean-Gabriel Domergue
Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born in Bordeaux in 1889. As a talented and precocious young painter, Domergue was already exhibiting works at seventeen for the Salon Des Artistes Français in Paris. In 1913, he was awarded the prestigious Second Prize of Rome, later winning the gold medal in the 1920 show. Domergue painted over 3000 portraits during his lifetime, from nude portrayals of fashionable actresses and young dancers to prized aristocratic sitters, such as Liane de Pougy and Nadine, the Baroness of Rothschild. Domergue not only transformed the representation of women in paint, but held an important role in the evolution of women’s fashion in France from the 1930’s onwards, designing dresses and hats for numerous famous couturiers including Paul Poiret and Henry Marque. Domergue was made Knight of the Legion of Honour and a Fellow of the French Academy of Fine Arts.
