About the Item

Signed oil on board portrait circa 1930 by French post impressionist painter Jean Gabriel Domergue. The work depicts a red-haired lady in an elegant blue dress and matching fascinator. Painted in the artist's unique style. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 23"x20" Unframed: 16"x13" Provenance: Private French collection Jean Domergue studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a pupil of an impressive array of prominent teachers of the time, including Jules Lefebvre, Tony Robert-Fleury, Jules Adler, Fernand Humbert and François Flameng. In 1927 he moved into Villa Fiesole in Cannes, which was said to have been most luxurious, and which he bequeathed to the town. It was also said that he owned good paintings. He was elected a member of the institute and, in 1955, made curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, property of the institute. Up until 1962 he organised large exhibitions in the museum of works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Baudelaire, Van Gogh, Berthe Morisot and Goya, as if to dispel any misunderstandings over his taste and personal judgements of art. His early works suggested a career as a landscape painter. However, he soon became a painter of nudes and semi-nudes. He first exhibited at the age of 17 at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1906. He received an honourable mention in 1908 and a gold medal in 1920, having been designated hors concours. In 2002 the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux held a retrospective of his work, and in 2003 around 30 of his works from the English collection of Janet and Howard Thomas were given to Villa Domergue in Cannes. Today his work can been in the artist's dedicated museum at the Villa Domergue in Cannes

Reverie - Neo-Impressionist Nude Figurative Oil Painting by Georges Lemmen
By Georges Lemmen
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed and titled oil on board nude circa 1905 by Belgian neo-impressionist painter Georges Lemmen. The work titled 'Reverie' depicts a red-haired lady who is kneeling down and resting her head on her arm. Signature: Signed lower right and titled on original artist's label verso Dimensions: Framed: 16"x19" Unframed: 10"x13" Provenance: Original artists label verso for Georges Lemmen at 96 Avenue Coghen , Brussels Private collection - Brussels Georges Lemmen was the son of an architect and studied under Amédée Bourson at the academy in St Joost-ten-Node. He was invited in 1889 to join the Group of Twenty ( Cercle des XX) which had been launched in 1884 by Oscar Maus and had in the interim emerged as an influential force in Belgian artistic circles, not least by bringing to public and critical attention the work of such artists as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. The Cercle des XX would be reborn in 1894 as La Libre Esthétique. In the early days of the Cercle des XX, Lemmen espoused a pointilliste technique. His earlier painting was clearly influenced by the Neo-Impressionists; over time, however, his style became more subtle and nuanced - recalling, perhaps, that of his compatriot Van Rysselberghe, another Cercle des XX member. With the group's rebirth as the Libre Esthétique, Lemmen's work became more intimiste in character, most notably in his portraits, nudes and still-lifes, where the influence of Bonnard and Vuillard is unmistakable, as is that of Renoir, particularly after Lemmen's travels in the Midi in 1911. From this point onwards, he would go on to make a major contribution to the renewal of the graphic and decorative arts in terms of his input to the new 'free' aesthetic and to Art Nouveau. Although his draughtsmanship retained its essential purity and elegance of line, his painting became more fleshy, imprecise and sensual, his compositions governed less by technical considerations than by the urgent need to express his emotions. Between 1889 and 1893, Lemmen exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, aligning himself with the Neo-Impressionists. In 1893, Henry van de Velde invited him to participate in the Pour l'Art association that had been created in Antwerp. He travelled to the south of France in 1911. By this juncture, he had already exhibited solo on two occasions (in 1906 and 1908) at the Galerie Druet in Paris. A further solo exhibition in 1913, his first in Brussels, cemented Lemmen's reputation. PROVENANCE Private Collection, Madrid Note: We are grateful to Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work which is recorded in the archives of the Artist. Painter born in Bordeaux, in 1889 and died in Paris in 1962. He began painting his mother's portraits very soon. He studied at the National Superior School of Fine Arts. The artist considered his teacher and inspiring Degas. Between 1904 and 1907 he joined Fauvism. In 1905 he participated in the "Autumn Hall" and in the "Hall of Independents". In 1907 he presented his 1st individual exhibition at the Vollard Gallery. He specialized in female portraits of Parisian ladies, creating a unique, sophisticated and elegant female portrait prototype that characterized him forever. He played an essential role in the evolution of women's fashion of his time. He designed numerous dresses, hats and accessories for famous designers such as Paul Poiret and Henry Marque It goes down in history as the architect of a new type of woman, thin, with an elegant air, always with style, with unusual elongated necks, with impressive slanted eyes, that seem to look at the world in amazement, perhaps because they express a feeling of freedom towards Society and its norms. With these paintings of women, he showed the world the true French, elegant, beautiful and with a gooseneck. In 1914 he won the Rome Prize. Many celebrities of the time posed for the artist, Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, etc. But although he painted numerous nude actresses...
