Rudolf von Steiger has masterfully portrayed his 'Dutch' cousin Arthur von Steiger in 1884 - Rudolf's father Johann Wilhelm and Arthur's father Karl Friedrich von Steiger were brothers. The portrait was created during a stopover during Rudolf's trip(s) to Italy or the cousins met in Italy in 1884. The Dutch branch of the Von Steiger family was knighted by the Dutch royal family in 1904. The painter Rudolf von Steiger, born in 1856 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as a scion of the well-known Swiss Bernese patrician family Von Steiger (Weisser Bock), was one of ten children of the plantation owner and former Royal Dutch naval officer Johann Wilhelm von Steiger (1818-1895) and his wife Henriette Maria Friederika Fanny, née Pigott (1825-1878) and spent his youth from 1858 in Thun, Switzerland, where his father had founded a rifle factory. Rudolf von Steiger attended the progymnasium and then went on an apprenticeship as a carpenter and site manager for two years from 1870 to 1872. Two years later, from 1874 to 1876, Rudolf von Steiger began studying art at the art school in Bern under Albert Walch (1816-1882) and Paul Volmar (1832-1906), before continuing his studies in painting under the guidance of Andreas Müller, Hugo Crola, Heinrich Lauenstein, Karl Müller, Peter Janssen the Elder. Ä., Eduard Gebhardt, Julius Roeting and Wilhelm Sohn from 1876 to 1887 at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. During his student days, on October 11, 1882, Von Steiger married the painter Emilie Johanna Elwin (1858–1948) and around 1883–1884 Rudolf von Steiger interrupted his education to realize works in Rome and Florence. After completing his studies in Düsseldorf, he first moved to Munich in 1887/88, then resided in his mother-in-law's house in Pempelfort in Düsseldorf around 1890 and later moved to Bern, where he lived until 1896. Eventually, Rudolf von Steiger returned to South America and lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina as a painter and teacher until his death on June 1, 1941.
