It seems that Pairman's early life was mostly spent in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, although he had strong connections to Edinburgh in later years. He was the second son of Robert Tairman (sic), who was a farmer in Staine near Biggar. Pairman received his education at the local schools in Biggar and was later sent to Glasgow as an apprentice draper. Upon returning to Biggar, he opened a drapery shop around 1808 but found more enjoyment in painting and drawing. His portrait of his brother Robert caught the attention of the local minister, who gave him his first commission. This led him to abandon his shop and pursue a career as an artist, initially in Glasgow, likely around 1815, and then in Edinburgh, likely around 1820.
During the 1830s, the location of his studio was recorded as 13 Hanover Street in Edinburgh's New Town, which is situated close to Princes Street. Additionally, he was recognized as a member of the Broughton Place Church on the eastern side of the New Town.
In 1841, he became the President of the Edinburgh Society of Artists. He passed away in Edinburgh on December 14, 1843, and was buried in the parish churchyard in Biggar.
Most of his early works were held by his brother Robert. These works have mostly been donated to the Biggar Museum Trust.
