Expressionistic Portrait of a Man in Red - Original Oil Painting
Airy 1970s close up portrait of a man (Art Danner) by listed artist Jon Blanchette (American, 1908-1987). The image is created with thin layers of paint on canvas, with the artists technique allowing the grain of the canvas to show through. The background is made of thin warm tones, with the natural flow of the paint visible. Cool browns and greys create the planes and other features of the face. A stripe of yellow frames the edge of his face, creating an area of contrast.
Signed, dated, and titled on verso: "Jon Blanchette / Art Danner / May 3 - 77"
Board size: 10" H x 8" W
Blanchette was born in Somerset, England and moved to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1918. Blanchette later studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute. In 1932 Blanchette and his wife moved to Los Angeles where he painted, did architectural design, and stage sets for Fox Studios. In 1948 he settled in Aptos, California where he painted fine art and taught privately.

Jon Blanchette
Jon Blanchette was born in Somerset, England, in 1908. He immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1918. Artistically inclined at age six, he later studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute, where he received his BA. In 1932, Blanchette moved to Los Angeles, where he painted, did the architectural design, interior decorating and stage sets for Fox Studios. In 1948, he settled in Aptos, California, where he painted fine art and taught privately. During the summers of 1965–75, Blanchette held workshops in Mendocino. A romantic realist, he was primarily an oil painter but was also proficient with pen ink, watercolor, and silkscreen. Blanchette died in Aptos in 1987. He had a membership for the Santa Cruz Art League and Marin County Artists. Blanchette exhibited at Santa Cruz Women's Club, 1959, and stood first in the Santa Cruz County Art Competition, Aptos Art Center, 1965.
