Josefine Batke - Koller (Austrian, 1897-1976) Portrait of a Young, Jewish Communist Brigadist from the Spanish Civil War • Oil on panel ca. 60 x 49 cm • Frame ca. 75 x 62 cm • Signed dated 1936 bottom right Haunting portrait of a young communist; either a brigadist of the Austrian battalion "12 February" of the XI. International Brigade, or then member of the mixed Brigadas Internacionales Brigadist. Both groups fought against the fascists in the Spanish civil war in 1936/37. Manier young jewish Austrians (Mainly from Vienna) with communistic ideals joined those foreign brigades to fight the fascists, so I speculate on good basis, that the portrait on offer depicts a young Jewish woman, having joined the brigades finding herself caught up in the horrors of the Spanish civil war. Note the ill-fitting, improvised uniform and the disillusioned gaze, full of anxiety about the things that are still to come or that she has already gone through. Jewish born Josefine Batke-Koller started her studies in fine art when as she signed up 1913/14 to a private tutored drawing school in Munich, Germany. From 1915 to 1916 she moved back to Austria and went on to study under M. Kurzweil at the Kunstschule for Frauen und Mädchen in Vienna. After that, from 1918 to 1919 she joined the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt and then finished her education by attending the classes of R. Jettmar und J. Jungwirth at the Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste from 1920 to 1927. From that point in time on, Josephine worked as free lance artiste painting in a realist stile but also accepting commissions for example designing Christmas card in a very naïve stile. After the second world war she moved on to a large formatted paintings of often a religious subject matter in a more expressionistic stile, moving away from her naturalistic roots.
