About the Item
This charming ex Christie's Victorian Orientalist oil painting is by noted French exhibited artist Lucien Laurent Gsell. The painting dates to around 1900 and portrays a beautiful young woman reclining on a couch. The painting is entitled in French - Odalisque. An odalisque was a chambermaid or a female attendant in a Turkish seraglio or harem, particularly the court ladies in the household of the Ottoman sultan. There is wonderful detail in her clothing and the fabrics around her as she gazes down, lost in thought. A lovely painting.

Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 28 inches unframed and in good condition.
Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 44 inches by 36 inches framed and in good condition.
French painter Lucien Laurent Gsell (1860-1944) was a student of Caspar Gsell (his father) and Cabanel at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Besides a painter, he was a contributor to the picture story prints of the Imagerie Quantin (a.o. 'L'Enfance de Gargantua'). He was the son of Gaspard Gsell and Caroline Adèle Laurent, daughter of Émile Laurent. He associated his mother's name with his father's name. He exhibited at the Salon of the Society of French Artists in 1880, and participated in the Universal Exhibition of 1889. In 1909, he moved to the National Society of Fine Arts. He was the nephew of Louis Pasteur, and painted various scenes representing the work of the Pasteur Institute. He mixed with Max Jacob, Guillaume Apollinaire, Douanier Rousseau and most Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. He painted both the elegant of good Parisian society, and the popular balls or carnivals. He left paintings of his many travels, describing the Nièvre, the Creuse, the Riviera, the Azores, San Remo, and even Buenos Aires, where General Galliéni had sent him on a mission. He was appointed painter of the Navy in 1911. He became famous for his genre scenes and colourful Impressionist-style landscapes; a great traveller, he painted in many provinces of France and especially the region of Dieppe and the country of Caux, as well as Provence and the Côte d'Azur, where he made views of ports and marines. He has also painted landscapes and scenes from North Africa, Mali, and Argentina.

This superb French Victorian portrait oil painting is by noted French society painter Jules-Elie Delaunay. Painted in 1883 it is a three-quarter length profile portrait of the Marquesa de Escombreras. Her full name was Trinidad Maria Piedad Fulgenico de Aguirre. She was born in 1824 in Cartagena, Spain, the seventh and last child of Jose de Aguirre, a retired naval officer. On October 22nd 1843 she married Frenchman Hilarion Roux (1819-1898) who was a banker from Marseille who settled in Cartegena in January 1843. After her marriage she was known as Trinidad Roux. Hilarion Roux had arrived in Cartagena first to trade silver. He quickly became one of the main lead industrialists in Catagena then in the Mediterranean area. The couple later lived in France again, in Marseille and later in Paris, where Trinidad died in 1905 aged 81. Interestingly there is no similar portrait of her husband.
