About the Item

Margaret Longstreth Baugh's "Woman with Violets" c. 1901 is oil on canvas, measures 26.75 x 13.75 inches, and is signed at the lower right. The work is framed and ready to hang. Margaret Longstreth Baugh was born in Pennsylvania in 1864 to Anna (Maddock) and Samuel Baugh, a president of the West Philadelphia Passenger Railway Company.[1] While little is known of Baugh’s life, she came from a prominent Philadelphia family. Her father was a member of the Fairmount Park Art Association.[2] He was also a member of the board of managers for the Free Public Library known as the Philadelphia City Institute between 1867 and 1885.[3] Baugh’s mother served on the women’s committee for the Great Central Fair held in 1864.[4] In 1882, Baugh stayed at the Hotel Kaaterskill while summering in the Catskill Mountains with her father, and brother William M. Baugh.[5] In 1897, Baugh resided in New York City when she contributed a decorative panel entitled Poppies to the annual exhibition of the Architectural League. Noting the quality of the work on display, the New York Tribune said that “women share honors almost equally with men in the work exhibited.”[6] The same year, Baugh exhibited Tunnel Mountain and Castine Lighthouse in the 8th Annual Exhibition of the New York Water Color Club.[7] The following year Castine Lighthouse was displayed at the 3rd Annual Exhibition of the Washington Water Color Club. The critic for the Evening Star said the work, “just misses being an extremely fine picture.”[8] In 1898, she exhibited in the 9th Annual Exhibition with the New York Water Color Club. The following year she contributed four works including Hesapa, Alice Wandering-Horse, Willow Pond, and Castle Crags to the 10th Annual Exhibition.[9] In 1899, Baugh also exhibited at the 32nd Annual Exhibition of the American Water Color Society held at the National Academy of Design. Her painting entitled Lights, “show[ed] a curious effect made by the reflection on a windowpane by the figure of a young woman in white who is looking on a distant prospect where harbor lights are twinkling.”[10] In 1900, her paintings entitled “Shouted-For”—Sioux Indian and Yellowstone River were shown at the 11th Annual Exhibition of the New York Water Color Club.[11] In 1901, Baugh exhibited at the 19th Annual Exhibition of the Rochester Art Club.[12] In 1914, Baugh and artist Sarah Henry exhibited at the 10th MacDowell Group Exhibition. Close friends, Baugh and Henry lived together at Tulips Hill Farm [13] near Alton, Pennsylvania [14]. Upon her death in 1918, Baugh left notable sums of money to Philadelphia Institutions including Holy Trinity Church, Polyclinic Hospital, and the Women’s Hospital.[15] She left $50,000 to the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art to promote the continued development of Pennsylvania Dutch Pottery.[16] She left $50,000 to Arthur Dow at Columbia University for the advancement of the Fine Arts in the United States. To her good friend and fellow artist Sarah Henry, she left $75,000.[17] During her lifetime, Baugh exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the New York Watercolor Club, the Society of Independent Artists, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Art Club, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
