Hans Lauer emerges as a sympathetic chronicler of Patagonian light, a German-born landscapist who made Argentina his country and Bariloche his enduring motif. Born in Nuremberg in 1902, he emigrated to Argentina in 1920 and fixed his practice in the Nahuel Huapi region, painting the blue-white atmospheres of the lake basin and the sheltering stands of native forest with a direct, self-taught hand; he remained rooted there until his death in Bariloche in 1989. Contemporary reports place him working across northern Patagonia—San Martín de los Andes among his circuits—where he translated the temperate Andean palette into sober oils and watercolors keyed to weather and season rather than to metropolitan fashions. Autodidact by formation, he belongs to that émigré cohort who stitched European discipline to local terrain, and by the 1950s–60s his production reflects an assured, observational plein-air habit that privileges structure over effect. While Bariloche provided the studio and the subject, his name also circulates in Buenos Aires contexts through collectors and dealers who sought Patagonian views during the mid-century tourism boom, an afterlife that helped keep his vistas in the market even as he remained geographically anchored to the south. Mark Acetelli was born in Detroit into an artistic household. Mark’s mother herself was a painter and some of his earliest memories were the smell of turpentine and oil paints. Growing up surrounded by his mother's work, she inspired and encouraged him to become an artist.
Acetelli’s paintings are inspired by the intensely personal introspective journey of life, from the ever-changing complexities of love, loss, birth, and death. The context of his work he describes as, “Absence and Presence” pertaining to how someone or something can be physically gone, but the essence still remains. Capturing the physical mixed with spirituality on canvas. His application of paint is an extension of that thought process. He works by continuously building up and tearing down, layer upon layer, adding and subtracting. A visceral dance between the conscious and the unconscious until the emotion is expressed.
Acetelli’s paintings may go through multiple incarnations with the past lying just beneath the surface, adding to its overall dimension and depth. Wonderful French period copy of the famous painting by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille, which the original is now in a museum in Paris.
This piece came from a private collection in New Jersey where it had been since it was purchased in France back in the 1950s. The previous owner was an Art dealer in NYC during the 1950s-70s and she kept some of her favorite paintings, this being one of them.
The piece was re-framed in the 1990s
In 35 years of dealing in paintings, I have never seen another example of this scene, it is very rare.!
History of the scene:
In the Siege of Hüningen (27 November 1796 – 1 February 1797), the Austrians captured the city from the French. Hüningen is in the present-day Department of Haut-Rhin, France. Its fortress lay approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the Swiss city of Basel and .5 miles (0.80 km) north of the spot where the present-day borders of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet. During the time of this siege, the village was part of the Canton of Basel City and the fortress lay in an area contested between the German states and the First French Republic.
