After completing a traditional education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen in 1894, Maurice Louvrier joined the Académie Libre, founded in Rouen by Joseph Delattre (1858-1912), where he learned to break free from all forms of “conformism.” His work is stylistically rich, he confronted the Impressionist “masters,” exhibited with them, and did not hesitate to tackle any subject. His palette was rich and diverse, his brushstrokes confident and energetic, expressing himself freely in a style that was both Impressionist and expressive.
Close to Claude Monet, whom he greatly admired, Maurice Louvrier retained the influence of the “master” in his work. He was often invited to visit Giverny. Whether painted from life or from memory, our sketch is a vibrant, “comma-filled” tribute, a manifestation of great attachment and devotion.
