About Artist
Mayowa Esan was born in the Late 80s in Ibadan, Oyo state Nigeria. His work can best be described as captivating, depicting black women with dark skin color according to the nature of his birth, being a Nigerian.
The African culture does not really give importance to the uniqueness and importance of black women in society. Hence, a lot of women are faced with different kinds of abuse ranging from marital to societal. This brought about the agitation for freedom for the black women in his paintings.
He believes they needed to be advocated for and the representation of his rich, vibrant colors is detailed in the expression of their dark skin. And also with their enlarged eyes depicting their various experiences in life.
Mayowa Esan was inspired by the family he was raised in, being polygamous, Raised predominantly in the company of many mothers, that has been through a series of pain and abuse shaping his decision to fight against abuse in his works. For Mayowa, true freedom and emancipation for women, especially the black community.
