About the Item
“Shared Horizon” is a contemporary figurative painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot, created as part of her ongoing series dedicated to women, emotional bonds, and human connection. The work captures a quiet, suspended moment in which togetherness is expressed not through dialogue, but through presence, posture, and a shared gaze toward the same horizon.
The composition depicts two women seated side by side on a shoreline, viewed from behind, facing the vast expanse of the sea. Their bodies lean gently toward one another, wrapped in a single, almost continuous mass of turquoise and blue. This visual unity suggests closeness and emotional alignment — two individuals sharing the same space, the same silence, the same direction. As Mougenot explains:
“I am not interested in telling who they are. I am interested in what exists between them.”
The horizon line stretches calmly before them, where water meets sky in layered shades of blue and white. It becomes a metaphor for the future — open, uncertain, yet shared. By placing the figures in contemplation of the same horizon, Mougenot emphasizes a bond built on companionship and mutual presence rather than action or narration.
True to her artistic language, the women’s faces are intentionally absent. This anonymity removes social labels and fixed identities, allowing the scene to remain universal. They could be friends, sisters, or a mother and daughter — what matters is not the definition of the relationship, but its authenticity.
“When faces disappear, relationships become more honest,” the artist notes.
“What remains is the truth of posture, distance, and trust.”
Authenticity is a central value in both Mougenot’s art and her vision of human relationships. She rejects performance, perfection, and idealization, choosing instead sincerity and emotional truth. This philosophy is mirrored in her creative process. Natalya works intuitively and spontaneously, painting without preparatory sketches and completing each piece in a single setting.
“I paint in one breath,” she explains.
“Because my work is about energy. If I stop, the message changes.”
The expressive brushstrokes and vibrant palette preserve the immediacy of the gesture. The sandy foreground, painted in warm reds, ochres, and flashes of pink and yellow, grounds the figures in the present moment, while the cool blues of the sea open the composition toward contemplation and depth. A small distant form floating on the water subtly reinforces the immensity of the world beyond the intimate foreground.
From a contemporary metamodern perspective, “Shared Horizon” balances simplicity and emotional depth. It avoids spectacle in favor of sincerity, echoing Mougenot’s belief that both art and relationships gain strength through honesty.
“The strongest bonds are the ones that don’t need to prove themselves,” she reflects.
“They simply exist.”
“Shared Horizon” is ultimately a meditation on authentic connection — on sitting side by side, facing the same future, and sharing a moment that is real, unfiltered, and alive. Through its intuitive execution and emotional clarity, the painting brings warmth, calm, and resonance into the space it inhabits, reminding us that both art and relationships are most powerful when they are true.

Natalya Mougenot id a french artist living in France for more than 20 years. She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes. She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country. She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now. In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult. As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult. Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference. She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details. Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach. Natalya manipulates different mediums without a preconceived plan since she is guided by what she wants to express at the moment by embracing the quality of my materials. She does not deny that her artworks reflect her intuitive approach and her love for vibrant colors which represent her who she is. Natalya says she is never able to create the same piece more than once. Sometimes she paints from photos or images. Sometimes she paints from memory. She tells to herself : "Just be yourself when you create ".

About the artist.
Clivette was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1868 as Merton Clive Cook, the youngest of five (four sons and one daughter). His father was a retired British sea captain, and his mother was an American of French, Scottish and Iroquois Indian stock.
He stayed with a circus for about five years, traveling all over the Western United States, Canada and Mexico. They did shows for the army forts, for railroad workers and on Indian Reservations.
Clivette settled in San Francisco in 1886, when he was offered a job as a reporter and theatrical writer for the San Francisco Call. He met Frederic Remington during this period. He was the first serious artist Clivette had met and he was an inspiration to him.
Clivette had done some drawing and painting on the road during his vaudeville years, he had a natural facility for it, and he had had some formal art training as well. He had had some training in Europe and was aware of the modern art movement in Europe. Later in New York he participated in symposiums and workshops at the Art Students League. Around 1910 he gave up his stage career and began to paint full time. He was about 40 years old and was to continue to paint vigorously and prolifically for the remaining 22 years of his life, His style can be identified with the Expressionist Movement, His subjects include portraits (some quite realistic, others more generalized) Indians and horsemen, laborers, gentlemen and vamps, jungle animals and birds, fish, seascapes and landscapes.
He was an active participant in the art world of New York. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In 1923 he showed at the Ainslee Art Gallery at 677 Fifth Ave., in 1925 at the Spanish Society in Brooklyn and in 1927 he had a solo show at the New Gallery, 600 Madison Ave. That same year there was also a solo show of his work in Paris at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, which included a catalogue. In 1929 he exhibited at the Art Center of the Roerich Museum in a group show of work from the collection of George Hellman. In 1930 he was in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans" which also included the work of Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, George Luks and Mark Tobey and sculptors Gaston Lachaise and William Zorach among others. A description and critical analysis of his work in included in the book by Henry Rankin Poore...
