Grandson of the famous British novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873), Neville Bulwer-Lytton was born in Calcutta in 1879, while his father Robert, a diplomat, was Viceroy of India. He studied at Eton College (U.K.) before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts, he exhibited his first works in the early 1900s. These included watercolor landscapes and oil-on-canvas portraits of eminent personalities of the time. He exhibited his work in several galleries and museums in England, including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
Mobilized during the First World War, he served as a major in the Royal Sussex Regiment on the Western Front, and was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur for his bravery. He also depicts several episodes illustrating the daily life of this war, notably through a series of pastel drawings.
