About the Item
This striking work explores African cultural identity as both personal and collective memory. Through the interplay of concealment and adornment, it presents the African body as a sacred vessel of tradition, ancestry, and storytelling.
This piece challenges viewers to confront their perceptions of African culture: not as a monolith nor as something fading, but as a living, breathing force passed through generations. The detailed beadwork, painstakingly rendered, is more than decoration — it is a declaration of presence, history, and pride.
In a globalized world that often asks indigenous cultures to adapt or disappear, this painting stands as a defiant act of preservation and pride. It speaks to a broader African experience of reclaiming identity, celebrating heritage, and honoring ancestors through art.

About Artist
Olaosun draws her inspiration from her life experiences and everything that touches her feelings. She is particularly interested in conveying messages on gender inequality problems, social issues, and African history, among other issues connected to black people. Through her art, Olaosun aims to create a connection with her viewers, making them feel the intensity of the story she tells.
The process of researching and working with different materials has brought Olaosun new challenges and new ideals, which encourage her to continue creating multiple layers in her artwork. Her dedication to self-teaching has allowed her to develop her skills in pencil and painting and has given her the confidence to express herself through her art.
Olaosun Oluwapelumi was born and raised in Osun State, Nigeria, and currently resides in Ibadan. She holds a BSc in Geography and Planning Science from Adekunle Ajasin University. Her passion for art has been a lifelong pursuit, and she continues to hone her craft with every piece she creates. Olaosun believes that black is not just a colour but our existence, and she uses black skin in her work to convey this message.
Olaosun Oluwapelumi is a passionate artist dedicated to creating positive change in the world through her art. Her medium of choice is acrylic and oil on canvas, and she spends days working on each piece to ensure that it expresses her emotions and connects with her viewers.
Recently, she used Green and Black in her works, which symbolize peace and tranquility, as well as hope, harmony, and optimism. Black is a colour of many sentiments. It could be associated with grief, mourning, the occult, mystery, bleakness, heaviness, depression, rebellion, or fear. However, it is also significantly associated with the strength and resilience of the African people.
She loves to create through the pain of people around her, to give them hope and let them know that they are not alone.
Olaosun's works have been exhibited locally and internationally in galleries and art fairs. She continues to create art that sparks emotions and creates positive change, and her works are a testament to her dedication to her craft and her desire to make a difference in the world.
