Paul Prosper TILLIER

Born in Vendée in France, Paul Tillier went to Paris in the 1850s and studied from 1855 in the studio of the academic painter Léon Cogniet, appointed professor of painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1851. He mainly painted portraits and allegorical and mythological subjects that he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris almost every year between 1863 and 1882. In 1865 he founded the artistic and literary circle rue Volney in Paris.
At the Salon in 1867, the famous art critic Louis Auvray wrote about Tillier art: “Mr. Tillier is a colorist as we like them; its color has warmth; transparency; nothing heavy, nothing thick; it is the blood which circulates under the epidermis, it is the light with its golden rays and its thousand reflections. Last year, we criticized his figures for overall flaws which no longer exist in the painting he exhibits: Achilles and Thetis. He is right to be as seriously concerned with drawing as with color. »
