About the Item

Pierre Louis Joseph De Coninck French, (1828-1910) Italian Beauty Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 31 inches x 23 inches Size including frame: 38 inches x 30 inches A lovely three quarter length portrait of a young woman with a coral necklace by Pierre Louis Joseph De Coninck. The sitter wears a traditional Italian outfit (possibly Sicilian) and headdress held in place by a coral tipped pin. Around her neck can be seen a matching three stringed coral necklace and cross. The woman has been depicted staring out at the viewer with her hands up to her ear, as if attaching an unseen earring. Behind her can be seen a woodland with a view of a church beyond. Coral was highly valued as a status symbol during the 19th century and was also said to ward off evil spirits. Pierre Louis Joseph De Coninck was born in Méteren, Northern France on the 22 November, 1828 to Augustin De Coninck and Lucie Rosalie Thooris. Although he showed a talent for art from an early age, he was initially apprenticed to Francois Delahaye a house and furniture decorator in Bailleul where he learnt how to mix oil paints and paint furniture. His work brought him to the notice Mr Leurs, mayor of Méteren, who helped him gain entry to Ypres and Lille schools of Art. In 1850, he went to Paris to study at the studio of Leon Cogniet (1794-1880) and in 1851 won a place at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Influenced by Cogniet, De Coninck began specialising in genre and historical scenes often with young women. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1857, continuing to exhibit there throughout his life. He won a number of prizes including 2nd prize at the Prix de Rome in 1855 and 3rd prize in 1852, 1853 and 1856. In 1858, he won the Academy’s Prix Gravure which enabled him to visit to Rome on a painting excursion for 2 years. His sponsorship allowed him to travel around visiting areas of interest including Naples where he was accompanied by the composer Bizet. Inspired by what he saw, he began producing genre scenes featuring Italian women for which he became known for. On his return to Paris, he continued to work and exhibit. He exhibited at the 1864 Exhibition held at the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris and also won medals at the Paris Salon in 1866 1868. He married Ernestine Marie Couvrit on 23 June, 1873. Their daughter Regina De Conick also became an artist. At some point during the 1880’s, De Coninck moved back to Méteren where he kept a studio. He died at Méteren on 5 July, 1910. Examples of his work can be found in galleries and museums including Smithsonian American Art Museum, Dunkirk Museum, Metropolitan Museum, New York, Lille Museum, Niort Museum. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles. Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879. During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co. He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum. 19th Century genre oil painting of a girl with flowers
By Jane Maria Bowkett
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Jane Maria Bowkett British, (1837-1891) Collecting Flowers Oil on canvas, signed with monogram Image size: 23.5 inches x 17.75 inches Size including frame: 29.25 inches x 23.5 inches A highly appealing genre painting of a young girl holding flowers by Jane Maria Bowkett. The girl is posed in a wild flower meadow in front of a wooded area and wears a white lace dress with a pink sash. On her head is a yellow straw hat decorated with white feathers and a ribbon. She is shown gripping the brim of her bonnet with one hand whilst holding a posy of flowers in the other. The girl bears a resemblance to the models featured in some of the artist's other paintings and could well have been a family member. Jane Maria Bowkett was a figure and genre painter born in Poplar, London on 17 September, 1837, the eldest child of Thomas Edward Bowkett and Jane Bowkett (nèe Watkinson). The family lived at East India Road where he father practiced as a surgeon, later becoming a doctor and was involved in the Chartist movement. Three of her sisters, Eliza Martha Bowkett (1839-1867), Jessie Undine Bowkett (1861-1886) and Leila Matilda Bowkett (1853-1924) also became artists. She attended the Government School of Design (now Royal College of Art) and in 1858 began her exhibiting career at the Society of Female Artist. In 1860, she started exhibiting at the British Institution and a year later made her debut at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. As well as exhibiting in London, she also exhibited more widely at the Birmingham Society of Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, Bristol Academy of Art and the Brighton Art Society. Most of her paintings were genre scenes featuring woman and children in a mixture of both interior and landscape settings. Her work also included a number of beach and coastal paintings. She married the still life and landscape artist Charles Stuart on 7 February, 1862 at All Saints Church in West Ham. Although married, she continued exhibiting under her maiden name. The couple spent the first years of their married life living in Stepney Causeway where they started a family. One of their sons Charles Edward Gordon...

The woman is depicted wearing a green striped dress with a white apron, whilst on her head is a mob cap decorated with a red ribbon. She is shown standing before a table containing a porcelain tea service on a silver salver. She is painted with her head turned towards the viewer as she expertly pours the tea into a cup. The mode appears similar to others figures the artist painted and could well have been the same person. Pierre Louis Bouchard was born Pierre-François Bouchard in Lyon on 2 May 1831 to Pierre Bouchard and Amelie Baron. In 1845, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he was taught by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860).
