About the Item
Laureen “Reen” Axtell is an acrylic and mixed media artist whose work is inspired
by the landscapes, history, and spirit of the American West. Raised in the
Denver/Boulder area and surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Reen developed an
early connection to the region. Her art is deeply influenced by the High Plains of
Eastern Colorado, where her family’s third-generation farm is located.
Reen studied art and graphic design at Colorado State University and spent more
than 40 years in the creative industry as a Graphic Designer, Art Director, and
Creative Director. This long career sharpened her eye for strong composition, color
relationships, and visual problem-solving. In 2018, she stepped away from the
corporate world to fully dedicate herself to fine art.
Her background in design continues to shape her artistic approach. Each piece
begins with a strong foundation—bold shapes, thoughtful composition, and a
vibrant color palette. Reen combines vintage photographs and imagery with
abstract, layered backgrounds, creating work that feels both nostalgic and
contemporary. Her process involves building and removing layers of acrylic paint,
then adding scratches, marks, transfers, and collage elements until a visual story
naturally unfolds.
A love of vintage photographs, memorabilia, and her family’s Western roots runs
throughout her work. Reen’s paintings offer a playful, modern reinterpretation of the
past, blending history with imagination. Her goal is to create artwork that feels
joyful, visually engaging, and grounded in strong design.
Reen’s work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions and galleries
throughout the West, including Gallery 1261 and the Arvada Center Galleries in
Colorado, as well as the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum in Wyoming.
She was also featured in the “Artist Spotlight” section of Western Art
Architecture
magazine (October/November 2025).
