Samuel Seeberger (Sieberger) was a known French artist and post-card designer who lived in Paris and was active around 1900-1940. He was arrested for being a Jew when the Germans occupied Paris in the 1940s. He was brought into a concentration camp and killed. Several of his works today belong to various private and public collections.
Pre War European Hasidic Rabbi French Judaica Oil Painting. Sieberger might be Polish or Hungarian. I doubt it is Russian as they use the Cyrillic alphabet. In the tradition of Moritz Oppenheim, Isidor Kaufmann and Maurycy Gottlieb and later of Tully Filmus and Itshak Holtz he captures this Jewish scene with a particular sensitivity. It is almost abstract in its stunning simplicity. This expressionism image was also done later by the Chabad Lubavitch artists Hendel Lieberman and Zalman Kleinman as well as many others.
