About the Item

Theodor Leopold Weller Mannheim 1802 - 1880 Pipe Smoker Oil on canvas Monogrammed lower right Size: 72.5 x 62.5 cm Frame: 83 x 75 cm Good original condition (slight age-related craquelure), frame slightly damaged Viewing and collection possible by prior appointment. Authenticity confirmed in writing. In 1818, Theodor Weller enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a student of Johann Peter von Langer, the first director of the Munich Art Academy. The German-Danish genre painter Ernst Meyer was studying in Munich at the same time. Weller also met Peter von Cornelius here, who was brought to Munich in 1819 by Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to redesign the Glyptothek, among other things. However, Weller's inclination lay more in depicting folk life and nature. With his detailed and meticulous painting style, he took Peter von Hess as his role model. In the fall of 1825, he traveled to Rome with his friend, the landscape painter Ernst Fries. Here he was accepted into the Academy of San Luca. His travels in Italy took him as far as Naples. In 1833, Weller returned temporarily to Mannheim, from where he visited Paris and Düsseldorf over the next three years. In 1839, he was drawn back to Italy. He remained in Rome until 1848, where he became a member of the German Artists' Association in 1845 and served on its board in 1846/47. In 1851, he was appointed director of the Mannheim Picture Gallery. At the same time, he held the position of chairman of the Mannheim Art Association for 23 years and was ultimately also its curator. The art historian and art writer Georg Kaspar Nagler wrote about him: "In his paintings, W. captured life from its charming, naive side and demonstrated an outstanding talent for idyllic representation. His figures move with moderate joy or indulge in cozy tranquility. ... His paintings are given a special charm by their vibrant, warm colors and the unaffected mastery of their execution."
