THE ARTIST
Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) was a prominent English portraitist whose poised, formal style bridged the Baroque tradition and emerging Georgian elegance. A pupil of Jonathan Richardson and teacher of Joshua Reynolds, Hudson was admired for his balanced compositions and meticulous attention to costume and likeness. His work shaped mid-eighteenth-century portraiture and influenced a new generation of artists.
THE SOUTHWELL COLLECTION
Everett Fine Art is excited to present this remarkable collection of paintings assembled over generations by the Southwell family, once resident at Kings Weston House, a fine 18th-century estate on the outskirts of Bristol.
The collection was first established during the 18th and early 19th centuries, and many of the works were personally chosen for the enjoyment they brought.
When Kings Weston was sold in 1833, much of the collection passed to the Russell branch of the family. The Russells continued to enrich the collection through the 19th century, commissioning works that reflected the interests and pastimes they valued-most notably, portraits of family members, horses and beloved pets. Thanks to the generosity of the Inge family, who acted as custodians during the 20th century, the collection remained largely intact.
In more recent years, the paintings returned to family ownership, where they have been carefully restored and preserved by Lord de Clifford (27th Baron de Clifford). Now, a number of these works are offered for sale.

Thomas Hudson
Thomas Hudson (1701–1779) was an English painter, almost exclusively of portraits. Hudson was born in Devonshire in 1701.
His exact birthplace is unknown. He studied under Jonathan Richardson in London and, against the latter's wishes, married Richardson's daughter at some point before 1725.
Hudson was most prolific between 1740 and 1760 and, from 1745 until 1755 was the most successful London portraitist. He had many assistants, and employed the specialist drapery painter Joseph Van Aken.
Joshua Reynolds, Joseph Wright and the drapery painter Peter Toms were his students.
Hudson visited the Low Countries in 1748 and Italy in 1752.
In 1753 he bought a house at Cross Deep, Twickenham, just upstream from Pope's Villa.
He retired toward the end of the 1750s. William Hickey described the elderly Hudson, "His figure was rather grotesque, being uncommonly low in stature, with a prodigious belly, and constantly wearing a large white bushy periwig. He was remarkably good tempered, and one of my first-rate favourites, notwithstanding that he often told me I should certainly be hanged.".
He died at Twickenham in 1779. His extensive private art collection was sold off in three separate sales.
Many of Hudson's works may be seen in art galleries throughout the United Kingdom. They include the National Portrait Gallery, the National Maritime Museum, Tate, Barnstaple Guildhall, Foundling Museum and the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery.

This is a three-quarter-length portrait of Ralph William Grey in a mole-coloured velvet coat and a long waistcoat of green satin, heavily embroidered in gold. Under his left right hand is a black chapeau bras. He has white doe-skin gauntlet gloves.
Son of William and Ann Grey of Backworth: born 19 December 1707. He married Mary the daughter of William Rawstorne of Newall in 1741 and died 5 November 1786. He was educated at Eaton and Trinity College, Oxford.
Within a year of his birth Mrs Grey died and, according to the Country Life article 'From that time forward all Mr Grey's faculties were concentrated on the well-being of his son. The possession of an heir gave zest to his efforts to build up the family fortune: he was successful in most of his ventures. Years later his interest in life was centred in the home of his daughter-in-law and grandchildren'.
Grey's right hand is depicted in the present portrait resting on Locke's Essays and the Country Life article also records that there are constant references to John Locke...

Portrait of Gilbert Sympkin
Oil on canvas
Image size: 29.25 inches x 24.5 inches
Size including frame: 38 inches x 33.25 inches
A fine three quarter length portrait of a gentleman traditionally identified as Gilbert Simpkin (Sympkin), follower of Enoch Seeman the younger, C1720. The portrait is set in a feigned sculptured oval cartouche, a device used to give a sense of depth. The sitter is depicted wearing a fashionable blue jacket and matching waistcoat with a white chemise and lace jabot. He wears a powdered wig in the fashionable style of the day and is posed holding his hat under his left arm with the fingers of his right hand stretched out. At court, long fingers signified wealth, culture and intelligence. The painting has clearly been executed by an artist of great ability who has been influenced by Enoch Seeman the younger.
Gilbert Simpkin (Sympkin) was born in London on 24 August 1683, the son of John Simpkin and Susannah Butler. His grandfather was also called Gilbert Simpkin. He entered Oxford University in 1700 where he studied at St John’s College. In 1702, he became a student of Middle Temple, which at the time was one of the world’s most important centres of legal education. He later settled in Plymouth and then Bristol. He died in Bristol on 15 May, 1744 and was buried at Bristol Cathedral. He remained unmarried and the portrait may well have been commissioned to commemorate when he was first Called to the Bar or perhaps had established his own practice.
Enoch Seeman or Seemann the younger was born in Danzig, Germany now Gdansk, Poland in 1694. His father was Enoch Seeman Senior, an artist of Flemish origin and his brothers Isaac, Noah and Abraham also became artists. He came to London with his father and brothers around 1704 and established himself as a portrait artist. From 1717 he became painter to the Royal court painting...
