About the Item
This refined late 19th-century copy of Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun’s 1791 self-portrait depicts the artist at her easel as she paints Queen Marie Antoinette. Holding a palette and brushes and dressed in an elegant black silk gown with a vivid scarlet sash, Le Brun subtly asserts her role as court painter. During a visit to Florence, she admired the Uffizi’s collection of artists’ self-portraits and later contributed her own, writing: “I painted myself with a palette in hand, in front of a canvas on which I am drawing the queen in white chalk.” Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with floral detailing. On canvas laid to board. Image size: 35 x 24.5cm.
