Description of the Work
Aubade ama femme depicts a seated female figure rendered with intense expressiveness and a restricted yet powerful palette: blacks, whites, greys, purples, and reds. The body is formed through energetic, gestural strokes, with thick and free brushwork. The face is only barely suggested, reinforcing the mystery and introspective tone of the piece. The background, worked with layers and textures, adds a charged and dramatic atmosphere.
On the vertical margins, two French inscriptions appear:
"Aubade," on the left, refers to a love song at dawn, traditionally associated with parting after a night of intimacy.
"Ama femme," on the right, can be interpreted as "love woman" or as a direct exhortation: "love, woman."
These words, integrated into the visual structure, provide the title of the piece and add a poetic and conceptual dimension, evoking themes such as love, female identity, separation, and desire.
Although the work is unsigned, its gestural strokes, the use of cardboard as a support, and the expressive language are reminiscent of Miquel Barceló’s style in the 1980s, when he explored unconventional materials and a visceral, symbolic kind of painting.
Connections can also be drawn with other figures in neo-expressionism and contemporary art such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, for the combination of word and image; Antoni Tàpies, for the materiality and use of signs; and Georg Baselitz or Francis Bacon, for the emotional intensity projected onto the human body.
