About the Item

A charming provincial 19th-century portrait depicting two young girls alongside their pets. The composition is grand in style, characteristic of the period, and rich with symbolic detail. Youth and playfulness are represented by the bonnet, ball, and racket, whilst books and manuscripts evoke themes of learning and refinement. The girls are portrayed with soft, rounded features typical of the Regency aesthetic, adding to the tender quality of the scene. Unsigned. Purchased with a companion piece, 'Portrait of a Boy with Hoop', (SR275), which is also listed for sale on our website. On canvas on stretchers.
