The Death Of General Wolfe,The Battle of Quebec 1759, 18th Century
after of BENJAMIN WEST (1738-1820)
Large 18th Century scene of the Death Of General Wolfe, oil on panel. Excellent quality work and historical battle scene as General Wolfe lies dying on the ground surrounded by his officers fatally wounded from three musket shots. The work is symbolic of the heroism and martyrdom of Wolfe who died on the battlefield at the moment of victory over the French. A near life size version of the painting is held at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. West produced several versions of the work during the period. Presented in an antique gilt frame. Unsigned.
