About the Item

Oil on Canvas. The painting refers in pictorial manner and subject matter to the production of Giacomo Francesco Cipper known as the Todeschini, an artist of Austrian origin but established in Milan. He was a specialist in market scenes, outdoor concerts, card players, and scenes of humble daily life realized with laughable caricature forcing and a search for comic effect. As in this 'work, which depicts a commoner, intent on drinking wine: despite the misery that shines through his clothes, the humankind comes across as cheerful and giggly, perhaps because of the excess of drinking, representing not desolation but the vitality and fun of daily life, albeit miserable. The painting has been restored and retiled and has, on the frame on the verso, a small cartouche with details of the restoration carried out. It is presented in repurposed antique frame.
