About the Item

This splendid early 18th-century French oil painting represents an ‘ex-voto’ with Emilian Jacobin and a depiction of the Virgin Mary with Christ and angels. Ex votos are votive offerings, usually in the form of paintings or carvings, given to a saint or divine figure as a symbol of gratitude for ‘grace received’. Generally confined to Christianity, the term is derived from ‘ex voto suscepto’, which translates as ‘from the vow made’. Votive offerings more broadly are known from the Neolithic period, while ex-votos, such as this, emerged in Italy during the late 15th century. The concept surrounds the notion of a vow, or pledge, that the votary will deliver an ‘ex-voto’ in exchange for divine assistance. For example, this could relate to a specific illness, the impending birth of a child, or a matter of deep pecuniary woe. In Mexico, even today, ex-votos are sometimes offered following an accident whereby the sufferer has made a fortunate recovery. Here, in this example from 1712, ‘Emilian Jacobin’, is portrayed with an image of the Virgin Mary, Christ and Angels. A Latin inscription above his open palm refers to ‘Pro G.R.’ or Pro Gratia Recepta, which translates as For Grace Received. His vow is unclear, but it’s conceivable that, given his outfit, he’s a local dignitary showing gratitude for his success. We’ve been unable to trace the coat of arms in the top left due to its similarity with numerous examples from France and Italy. He appears to be holding a tricorn under his right arm. It’s a particularly unusual piece. We’ve never seen another quite like it. Unsigned and held in a later frame. Provenance: Private collection, France. Our reference: BRV2154

Early 19th-Century Central European School, Christ The Saviour, Oil Painting
Located in Cheltenham, GB
US buyers pay no import tariffs on this item. This early 19th-century central European oil painting depicts Christ The Saviour standing atop an orb and carrying a cross over his left shoulder. An unusual composition, Christ’s rather striking posture is perhaps more ‘Saturday Night Fever’ than it is sacramental. However, the iconography is archaic and derived ultimately from New Testament illustrations dating to the Middle Ages. Depictions of orbs are usually symbolic of the universe, while the cross alludes to redemption. Hence, it’s a visual representation of Christ as the Saviour of humanity. Francisco de Zurbarán...
