About the Item

On offer is an original portrait of a dapper yet dignified young gentleman, perfectly confident in both his direct gaze at the viewer and the elegance of his attire. There’s the shapely dark coat over a distinctive tartan waistcoat and a white shirt with a black pinned cravat. A gold watch chain is visible, and a small flower is pinned to his lapel. This style of dress reflects the masculine aesthetic of the period. As such, this work is very characteristic of American folk-art portraiture, which often featured just such a direct gaze and rich colors with meticulous attention to the sitter's clothing to convey the subject's social standing and refinement.
