About the Item
A very fine portrait of a gentleman thought to be of the name 'Riddell'. Possibly related to the Clan Riddell, local to Edinburgh the family were wealthy merchants. This well-dressed gentleman wears a dark, fashionable high-collared jacket and starched cravat. The portrait is very well presented in an oval gilt mount and simple gilt frame. Unsigned but there is a handwritten label to the reverse giving the sitter's identity. Written at a later date, possibly copied from an original inscription. On canvas on stretchers.
