About the Item
I love the feisty attitude of the girl depicted! With her hand on her hip, she seems to be saying to the artist: "Whatya looking at anyway?" She looks like she has a good head on her shoulders and her feet firmly on the ground. She's no professional artist's model, that much is certain. She is not finding it necessary to put on a smile. There is nothing artificial about her, and her face shows her every emotion.
I have not been able to identify her costume: she might be a bohemian girl, or a peasant girl from the South of Europe. The materials on which the picture is painted, notably the stamped French 6M strecher, are from a metropolitan colour merchants' . This is not something you would have been able find in the countryside, and it is hence likely that the artist was on a study trip abroad, curious about locol cultures and costumes. How interesting it would be to know how the artist and his model met!
