About the Item

Portrait of Maharaja Bhim Singh of Jodhpur , late 18th century Gouache, opaque watercolor , gold on paper Dimensions : 12 x 8 ½ in. ( 18 x 14 in. w. frame) This finely rendered painting in opaque watercolor heightened with gold and silver within a green border, on paper, shows the ruler Maharaja Bhim Singh of Jodhpur (ruled 1793-1803) in audience. The bejeweled Maharaja is shown seated on an elaborate silver throne under a canopy of printed cloth, dressed in a superbly embroidered orange robe, with three attendants behind him and consenting to an audience . A visitor on the left wears a tall and bejeweled turban, possibly of the Kumpavat clan. The Maharaja and his attendants also wear a similar turban style. One attendant holds the Maharaja’s morchhal ( tall fan of peacock feathers), another a shield. The supports for the canopy are in silver. The Maharaja’s nimbus, his fine turban and robe are all highlighted in gold. Bhim Singh was a grandson of Maharaja Bijay Singh. He gained access to the throne in 1793 and his reign was characterized by power struggles, briefly taking Mehrangarh but eventually ceding power. His daughter was married to Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh of Jaipur, fostering cultural exchange. Note : for comparative study, see a very similar painting of Maharaja Bhim in the collection of the LOUVRE ABU DHABI Museum under reference LAD 2011.061 Both the Louvre Abu Dhabi painting and our painting depict Maharaja Bhim in similar poses, with identical characters and colors, and are most probably executed by the same court artist. Yet , it is our opinion that the expressiveness and rendering of the various characters is more subtle and superior in our version.
