Large 18th Century Spanish Colonial Oil Painting of Saint Barbara Oil on Relined Canvas Likely Cuzco School (Peru) Depicts Saint Barbara holding a castle's tower with three windows (explained hereinbelow) Approx. Dimensions: 45" H x 36" W St Barbara was beheaded by her pagan father after building a tower with three windows representing the Christian trinity; the tower and the sword that took her head are her symbols. The castle tower is a symbol of St. Barbara, V.M., 803, the Patron of fortifications. Spanish Colonial Art is defined as the artistic production of Spain's colonies in the New World. These works followed the historical development of styles previously established in Spain but developed original features in different regions. The main centers were in Peru and Mexico, where there were skilled native artisans and relatively strong political organization. The style, with its unique mix of Spanish and indigenous elements, flourished until the last quarter of the 18th century when a current of neoclassicism invaded Latin America along with the official academies, and the great days of Spanish colonial art and architecture were basically over. The Cusco School (Escuela Cuzquea) or Cuzco School, was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Peru (the former capital of the Inca Empire) during the Colonial period, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was not limited to Cuzco only, but spread to other cities in the Andes, as well as to present day Ecuador and Bolivia. Some original Cusco School paintings were preserved, most of them are located at Cusco, but also currently there are in the rest of Peru and in museums of Brazil, England, and the United States. The Cuzque paintings were a form of religious art whose main purpose was didactic. The Spanish, who aimed to convert the Incas to Catholicism, sent a group of religious artists to Cusco. These artists formed a school for Quechua people and mestizos, teaching them drawing and oil painting. The designation "Cusque" however, is not limited to the city of Cusco or to indigenous artists, as Spanish creoles participated in the tradition as well. A major patron of the Cuzco artists was Bishop Manuel de Mollinedo y Angulo, who collected European art and made his collection available to Peruvian artists. He promoted and financially assisted such Cusque artists such as Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallao, Antonio Sinchi Roca Inka, and Marcos Rivera. Cusco School paintings were made by mestizos, Quechua-Indians and Whites-creoles. The defining characteristics of the Cusque style are believed to have originated in the art of Quechua painter Diego Quispe Tito. Cusque paintings are characterized by their use of exclusively religious subjects, their lack of perspective, and the predominance of red, yellow and earth colors. They are also remarkable for their lavish use of gold leaf, especially with images of the Virgin Mary. Though the Cusque painters were familiar with prints of Byzantine, Flemish, and Italian Renaissance art, their works were freer than those of their European tutors; they used bright colors and distorted, dramatic images. They often adapted the topics to depict their native flora and fauna as a backdrop in their works. Most Cusque paintings were created anonymously because of Pre-Columbian traditions that define art as communal. An exception is one of the last members of the Cuzco School, Marcos Zapata (c. 1710-1773). Other known artists of the Cuzco School include Diego Cusihuamn, Gregorio Gamarra, Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallao (1635-1710), and Antonio Sinchi Roca Inka. Related to the school is the Master of Calamarca, in the 18th century, Bolivia.

During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki) Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits.
