About the Item
A truly charming mid 19th Century scene in oil, showing a trio of men at a tavern, each smoking their clay pipes. The artist has wonderfully captured three distinct characters; the dapper fellow at the front of the scene boasts a fashionable mustache and jauntily feathered cap. The man to the left seems to have gotten a little groggy on his ale and the mysterious man at the back, prepares his pipe with his head down, half concealed in the shadows. The painting is unsigned, on canvas.Â
The painting has been presented in its original Empire style frame which boasts delicate foliate strapwork and laurel and berry molding. The frame is finished with a gilt slip.
