Florentine school of the mid-19th century, pair of oil on cardboard portraits depicting painters Peter Paul Rubens and Anthon Van Dyck in their magnificent original carved and gilded wooden frames.
Very good condition, small lack to one frame.
In 19th-century Florence, before the advent of photography, there was a widespread custom of making copies of the masterpieces contained in the city's museums; portraiture was a fashionable theme that was revived through the copying of the most famous self-portraits, painted with great skill in Florentine workshops and later framed in splendid carved wooden frames finely gilded with pure gold leaf.
