This work depicts William Shakespeare as he appeared in a print from c. 1830 by engraver Benjamin Holl (1808-1884 (see Library of Congress). Holl based his work on an earlier print by Jacob Houbraken (1698–1780) which Houbraken executed for the English historian Thomas Birch’s series The Heads of Illustrious Persons in Great Britain (London, 1747) (see Met Museum collection).
