About the Item

A finely executed and richly symbolic portrait by Dutch artist Thomas van Leent (1807-1882). A young woman sits in a stone niche holding a book in her lap whilst a parrot in a gilded cage sits on the ledge in front of her. Van Leent draws inspiration from previous works that use the symbol of a parrot, such as Caspar Netscher's Woman Feeding a Parrot, with a Page and Gerrit Dou's Young Woman in a Niche with a Parrot and Cage. Indeed, the parrot was a popular motif in Dutch genre painting, often carrying sexual connotations. This is supported by the cherry – commonly associated with sex and virginity – which the parrot holds in its beak. Parrots were often depicted free from their cage, representing a loss of virginity or innocence. Here the parrot is confined, but reaches outside the cage to eat the cherry. If the freed bird represents the loss of virginity, then this parrot, still within the cage but straining against the bars, is perhaps representative of the woman's imminent transition to adulthood.
