About the Item
This small portrait, oil on panel 24 x 17 cm, is signed and dated in the upper right corner in openna cursive "Valentino Ghiglia 1934." It depicts a maiden with cropped hair and a somewhat surprised expression, dressed simply in dark, in a country setting that, from the color, could be a wheat field, probably intent on picking red flowers. From the color of the sky and nature, one can assume a warm early summer day.
Valentino Ghiglia came from a family of artists; his father Oscar and brother Paulo were also painters, while three other brothers pursued musical careers. Born in Tuscany, he has lived in both Spain and France. Definitely influenced by the art of the period, from Macchiaioli to Impressionist styles, he also looks to Japanese influences.
