Painted in 1961, this work belongs to Vladimir Igoshev’s celebrated cycle dedicated to the Indigenous Peoples of the Russian North. The painting depicts a young reindeer herder, portrayed in traditional clothing typical of the taiga regions, with a restrained palette and dense, expressive brushwork.
Igoshev is widely known as the “singer of the North,” a designation earned through his long-term engagement with the cultures of the Khanty, Mansi, and other northern peoples of Russia. Although trained, teaching, and officially recognized in Moscow, he repeatedly returned to the northern territories, seeking direct contact with his subjects and documenting their faces, costumes, and physical features with remarkable precision.
Executed in the same year the artist was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR, this painting reflects the sober, human-centered approach often associated with the Soviet “Severe Style.” Today, Igoshev’s works are held in major museum collections, including the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum, as well as in international private collections.
