About the Item

“A Mulatto Girl, 1879” by Walter Scott Boyd (British, c. 1860-c. 1950) The identity of this young girl is presently unknown; however, the title of the work reveals some information about her background. The term “mulatto,” now considered outdated and offensive, was often used to describe someone of mixed African and European ancestry. The history of the term is complicated with some sources suggesting roots in the Latin word “mūlus,” meaning “mule.” Despite the term being considered derogatory even in the 19th century, Boyd depicts the girl in an unusually faithful and optimistic manner. Produced around the peak of the aesthetic movement in Great Britain, this work highlights a broader interest in the “exotic” in the Victorian era. The wallpaper lining the background features an eclectic mix of flowers, birds, and figures borrowed from different cultures. The sitter’s floral dress appears as almost an extension of the background. This is an early work by Boyd, who maintained a studio in Birmingham and exhibited his work at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. Clearly fascinated by the “exotic,” Boyd would go on to paint a portrait of an African warrior in 1880. This work is oil on canvas and is housed in a period gilt wood frame. It is signed and dated by Boyd in the lower right. A faintly inscribed label on the reverse reveals the title of the work along with other indiscernible information.
