About the Item
An enchanting oval portrait capturing a young girl, curled up in an oversized Louis XIV armchair. She wears a deep blue dress, her dark hair neatly arranged and held in place by two white bows and a delicate white headband. Painted in pastel by the artist Wilhelm Sjölander (1857–1932) and signed “Willy Sjölander” in 1922, the work radiates both tenderness and elegance. The portrait exudes a refined and timeless charm.
Jean Otto Wilhelm Sjölander was born in 1857 in Marbäcks parish (in what is today Ulricehamn), Älvsborg County, Sweden, and died in 1932 in the same region. Sjölander received his formal artistic education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, studying there from 1877 to 1878
During the 1880s, he was part of a small artists' circle in Stockholm, alongside figures such as Herman Norrman, Hjalmar Linde, the writer Gustaf Janson, architect John Bergling, and decorative painter Filip Månsson
Sjölander specialized in portraiture, often traveling from one manor to another to paint the portraits of its owners and nobility
Besides portraiture, Sjölander painted many landscapes inspired by his native Västergötland. He was also responsible for altarpieces in Marbäcks Church and Påbo Chapel in Västergötland, marking notable contributions to ecclesiastical art.
Though not widely known internationally, Sjölander was regarded as a dedicated and skilled painter whose oeuvre reflects both his academic training and affinity for the Swedish countryside. His landscapes deliver a gentle nostalgia, while his portraits convey a close connection to his sitters and their environments.
