About the Item
This distinguished oil portrait of President John Tyler was painted by William Garl Brown, one of the South’s most respected portrait artists of the mid-19th century. Capturing Tyler in a three-quarter profile, the painting emphasizes his thoughtful expression, prominent cheekbones, and neatly styled hair, complete with mutton chops characteristic of the period. Brown’s skill lies in his ability to convey character through restraint and realism. The warm, subdued background and the rich red and gold-trimmed chair create an aura of dignity and authority without distracting from the sitter’s presence. Tyler, the 10th President of the United States, is portrayed here with a sense of calm confidence and stately reserve. The painting comes in a period frame and is in excellent condition, a remarkable historic portrait with presidential significance. This painting is unsigned but has been authenticated by scholar on artist.
