Hogarth began this self-portrait in the mid-1730s. Initially Hogarth painted himself wearing a formal coat and wig before later changing to the informal attire that we see. Propping the oval canvas up are three volumes of authors who influenced him; Shakespeare, Swift and Milton appealed to Hogarth’s dramatic and satirical leanings.
On his palette is the ‘Line of Beauty and Grace’, which underpinned Hogarth’s theories on art. Hogarth’s pug dog, Trump, serves as an emblem of the artist’s own pugnacious character.
The piece is titled, dated and monogrammed.
