William Merritt Chase
William Merritt Chase rejected his father’s shoe business in favor of studying art professionally, training with Barton S. Hayes in Indianapolis and going abroad to the Royal Academy in Munich. His brushwork and use of light was similar to the French Impressionists, and his style of visual modelling was particularly influenced by Eduoard Manet. After he finished his studies Chase travelled to New York City and began teaching as part of the Art Students League, quickly becoming a renowned teacher. He incorporated Impressionist techniques along with his more traditional European education to create unique images imbued with the valued urbanization and expansion of New York City. Later in his life, Chase established the Chase School, which eventually was renamed the Parsons School of Design.

Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master.
In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay.
In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. That painting received favorable reviews both in Europe, and later in Philadlephia where it was exhibited alongside the works of other Philadelphia Artists exhibiting at the Salon that included Thomas Eakins, Pearce, Edward May...

During her expatriate career, between the mid-1880s and return to the United States in 1920, painter and muralist Mary Fairchild MacMonnies (later Low) was one of the most successful American women artists of her generation. Mary Fairchild was born in Connecticut, but was raised largely in St. Louis, Missouri. Inspired by her mother's work as a painter of miniatures and dissatisfied as a school teacher, she enrolled in the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, where she led a movement for women to be permitted to draw model posed in the nude, an important component of artistic training then considered improper for well-bred young women. Albert Jean Adolphe was known as a decorator, a portrait painter, and a landscape artist. He worked in oil and watercolor. Born in Philadelphia in 1865, he attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art. After graduation, he traveled to Europe and studied under Jean Leon Gerome and James Whistler at the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris and under DeVriendt in Antwerp.
Adolphe was a member of the Graphic Sketch Club and the Philadelphia Art Club. In 1894, he was awarded a honorable mention at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago and in 1899 he received an honorable mention in Paris. From the Philadelphia Art Club he won the Stotesbury Prize. He did decorative work at the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
For many years, Adolphe showed in Chicago, St. Louis, and in Philadelphia. From 1898 to 1902, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and later in Antwerp and Munich.
